Wisconsin hens lay 313 eggs per year

Wisconsin hens produced a total of 2.43 billion eggs in 2024, 15 million more than the year prior, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The state had an average of 7.6 million laying hens on hand during the past year, which was a slight decrease from 2023.
However, Wisconsin chickens were more productive than in years past, with the average number of eggs laid per hen up from 311 to 313. Nationwide, the average number of eggs laid was only 290.
The inventory of all chickens also increased in 2024 to 10.3 million head, for a total value of $69.1 million.
Egg prices in the U.S. hit a national average of $6.23 in March, due in large part to the effects of a bird flue epidemic, but since then have crashed to just above $3 a dozen, wholesale, according to the USDA’s weekly report.
